Thousands of years ago, people used different kinds of toilet paper depending on where they were. Toilet paper was first mentioned in 589 AD in Korea. The first modern toilet paper was made for the needs of the Chinese Emperor family. Today, Toilet paper is a large industry and is made with many different decorations, textures, and colors.

Joseph Gayetty
For some people, they do not know what Toilet paper is. Did you know about four billion people do not use Toilet paper? That's about 70 - 75% of the world's population! They are either too poor to buy it or too cheap to buy decorative paper that they would wipe on their butts. In some parts of the world, they don't use Toilet paper because of the lack of trees.
Some people want to use Toilet paper more than others. 7% of Americans steal Toilet paper in hotels or motels.

Although we don't have an exact name of the inventor of toilet paper, the prime suspect is Joseph Gayetty. Joseph Gayetty made medicated rolls of paper marketed as,“Gayetty’s Medicated Paper”, in 1857. This toilet paper prototype was considered "a commercial disaster". The person to patent actual toilet paper was a man by the name of Seth Wheeler. He became the first person to sell plain toilet paper on a roll. In 1935 the first "splinter-free" toilet paper came out. The first soft, two-ply toilet paper was made in England around 1942. Since then, toilet paper has turned into a large industry with many new ideas like moist toilet paper, perfumed toilet paper, and colored toilet paper.

Who doesn't love toilet paper?
